Energy-Efficient Pool Design for Adelaide Summers

Adelaide summers are hot and dry. A pool can either be a major energy drain or remarkably efficient — design choices made at build time set the lifetime running cost. This guide covers the design and equipment decisions that have the biggest impact.

Pool size and depth

Larger pools cost more to heat, more to filter, more to chlorinate, and more to maintain. The smallest pool that meets your actual swimming needs is the cheapest to run. A 6m family pool is dramatically cheaper than a 10m pool — and 95% of family use cases are met by a 6m–7m pool.

Thermal cover

The single highest-impact running-cost decision. Without a cover, you lose 60–70% of heat overnight to evaporation and radiation. With one, you keep 80%+. Specify a thermal cover at build time — manual or automatic-reel — for the lowest lifetime running cost.

Variable-speed pump

VS pumps run at the lowest speed that maintains adequate filtration, drawing 60–80% less power than fixed-speed. Australian energy efficiency rules now require VS pumps on most new pool installs — but make sure your quote uses a quality unit (Davey, Hayward, Pentair) not a lowest-bidder unit.

Heat pump over gas (for shoulder months)

Electric heat pumps deliver 4–5 units of heat per unit of electricity input. Gas delivers 0.85 units per unit of input cost. Over 7 months of shoulder + summer use, the heat pump saves $1,200–$2,800/year vs gas. Gas is best for occasional ‘boost’ heating, not primary heat.

LED lighting

LED pool lights draw 80% less power than the old halogen lights for similar brightness. They also last 25,000+ hours (vs 2,000 for halogen). All new builds default to LED.

Solar pool heating + thermal cover combo

Solar collectors plus a thermal cover is effectively free pool heating for 9 months of the year in Adelaide. Roof aspect dependent — north-facing pitched roofs are ideal. Combined with a heat pump as winter backup, this is the gold-standard energy-efficient setup.

Specify on quote

Tell your builder you want energy-efficient defaults. Quotes can show the running-cost difference between basic and efficient builds — usually $40–$100/month meaningful difference over 10 years.
