When to Resurface Your Pool — Adelaide Owners’ Guide
Concrete pools need an interior resurface every 15–25 years. Fibreglass pools need a re-coat every 25–30 years. Catching the right moment saves real money — too early is wasteful, too late means structural damage that costs much more to repair. This guide covers the signs and the timing.
Surface roughness
Run your hand along the pool wall in the shallows. Smooth = healthy surface. Sandpaper feel = aggregate exposed. Sharp scrapes = surface aggressive failure. The sandpaper stage is the right moment to resurface — wait longer and the structural shell starts taking damage.
Visible aggregate exposure
If you can see individual pebbles or quartz grains standing proud of the surface, the cement matrix has worn back. Functional indicator that the wear is at the surface-renewal stage.
Algae you can’t keep on top of
Persistent algae growth despite correct chemistry usually means the surface is rough enough to harbour biofilm. Resurfacing fixes the problem; chemistry alone won’t.
Tile drop-off at waterline
Waterline tiles popping off, grout washing out, or grout discolouration usually means the underlying cement is breaking down. Best to resurface and retile in one pass — patching often fails within 2–3 years.
Cracking
Hairline surface cracks (less than 1mm) can be addressed with epoxy injection. Anything larger is a structural concern — get a builder to assess before resurfacing alone is the answer.
Cost vs timing
Standard pebblecrete resurface: $8,000–$18,000. If you wait until water is leaking through structural cracks, you’re doing a $30,000–$60,000 major renovation instead. The 5-year window between ‘getting rough’ and ‘structurally compromised’ is where the smart-money moment is.
